Two Types of FOMO Every Esthetician Should Use in Their Marketing

One of my favorite marketing lessons is that not all FOMO is created the same. (FOMO stands for Fear of Missing Out.)

When most people hear the term, they think of countdown timers, limited-time offers, or promotions that expire at midnight.

While those strategies certainly have their place, they're not the only way to create excitement around your business.

As an esthetician, you have two much more natural ways to create FOMO through your content. Better yet, both build trust while gently encouraging bookings.

The First Type of FOMO: Become Your Clients' Skincare Celebrity

Think about the creators you follow online.

You probably love seeing:

  • what's in their skincare routine

  • the products they keep repurchasing

  • what's in their travel bag

  • what sits on their bathroom shelf

  • the little habits they swear by

It's not because you necessarily want to buy every product they mention.

It's because you're curious about the person behind the recommendations.

Your clients feel exactly the same way about you.

As an esthetician, your audience sees you as the skincare expert. They genuinely want to know what you use, what you recommend, and what products you can't live without.

When you share those moments, you're inviting people into your world.

You're building trust long before they ever book an appointment.

Esthetician Content Ideas

If you want to position yourself as the trusted skincare expert, try creating content around:

  • My summer skincare shelfie.

  • The skincare products always in my bag.

  • My favorite products for hot weather.

  • The one skincare product I can't live without during summer.

  • My skincare shelf vs. my clients' skincare shelves.

This style of content makes your audience think:

"I wonder what my esthetician recommends."

And that's exactly what you want.

The Second Type of FOMO: Make People Want to Be Your Client

The second type of FOMO shifts the spotlight.

Instead of making people curious about you...

You make them curious about what it's like to be one of your clients.

Because your clients are the ones receiving personalized recommendations, customized treatments, and professional guidance.

They're getting access to something your audience doesn't have yet.

This type of content helps potential clients imagine themselves sitting in your treatment room.

Esthetician Content Ideas

Try creating posts like:

  • The treatments my clients are booking this summer.

  • The skincare questions my clients are asking me most right now.

  • My favorite before and after transformations this season.

  • My clients' biggest summer skin goals.

  • POV: A client walks in stressed before a wedding, vacation, or reunion... and leaves glowing.

This style of content creates a completely different emotional response.

Instead of thinking:

"I want to know what she uses."

Your audience starts thinking:

"I wish I was one of her clients."

Why This Esthetician Marketing Strategy Works

Both styles of content create desire, but they do it differently.

The first positions you as the trusted skincare authority.

The second positions your clients as people your audience wants to become.

Neither relies on discounts.

Neither feels overly promotional.

Instead, they build trust, curiosity, and emotional connection.

And those three things are often what lead to bookings.

Challenge Yourself This Month

As you're planning your esthetician content this month, try creating posts from both categories.

Some should leave your audience thinking:

"I need to know what my esthetician recommends."

Others should leave them thinking:

"I wish I was one of her clients."

When you intentionally mix both types of FOMO into your content strategy, you'll naturally increase interest in your services, strengthen trust with your audience, and make booking with you feel like the obvious next step.

That's one of my favorite forms of marketing because it never feels pushy.

It simply makes people want to be part of what you're already creating.
