Three Branding Mistakes That Make Your Esthetics Business Harder to Remember

One of my favorite things about marketing is that your potential clients rarely book after seeing just one piece of content. They might discover you through a Reel today, visit your website next week, open one of your newsletters a month later, and then finally decide it's time to book an appointment.

The question is, does your business feel like the same brand every time they come across it?

One of the biggest goals of esthetics marketing is building familiarity. The more often someone recognizes your business, the more likely they are to trust you when they're ready to invest in professional skincare. But when your branding constantly changes from platform to platform or from trend to trend, you're unintentionally asking people to get to know your business all over again. That creates friction, and friction is the last thing you want when you're trying to earn someone's trust.

Here are three branding mistakes I commonly see aesthetic professionals make and how you can avoid them.

1. Changing Your Brand Identity With Every Trend

I love a good social media trend, and I absolutely think there's room to incorporate trends into your content strategy. The mistake isn't participating in trends. It's allowing every trend to completely change the way your business looks and feels.

One week your content has a clean, minimal aesthetic. The next week you've switched to bright colours, different fonts, and an editing style that looks nothing like the rest of your feed because that's what's currently trending. While each post might look great on its own, together they start to create a brand that feels inconsistent.

Instead of changing your identity every time a new trend appears, look for ways to adapt the trend to your existing brand. If you want to try a popular text effect or editing style, use your own brand fonts and colours so the content still feels recognizably yours. Trends should support your brand, not replace it.

2. Relying Too Heavily on Stock Images

Stock photography can absolutely have a place in your marketing. It can help fill the occasional gap or support educational content, but it shouldn't be doing all of the visual work for your business.

Your future clients aren't just buying a facial or a skincare treatment. They're choosing to trust you with their skin. They want to know who they'll be spending an hour with, what your treatment room feels like, what products you recommend, and what an appointment in your space actually looks like.

That's why your own photos and videos are so valuable. They create familiarity long before someone ever walks through your door. They help your audience picture themselves in your treatment room, and that emotional connection is something stock photography simply can't recreate.

The good news is that creating original content has never been easier. A smartphone, a tripod, and a little planning can give you months' worth of content. And don't underestimate the power of editing. Small adjustments to lighting, colour, and exposure can instantly make your photos feel brighter, more polished, and much more cohesive.

3. Creating a Different Identity on Every Platform

Your Instagram, website, email newsletters, and printed materials don't need to look identical, but they should all feel like they're part of the same business.

When someone clicks from your Instagram profile to your website, the experience should feel seamless. The colours, fonts, photography style, messaging, and tone should all reinforce one another so your brand becomes easier to recognize every time someone interacts with it.

Think of every marketing platform as another opportunity to strengthen your identity. The more consistent your business feels, the more professional, memorable, and trustworthy it becomes. Over time, that's what helps someone choose you over another esthetician they found online.

Great Branding Is About Recognition, Not Perfection

One of the biggest misconceptions about branding is that it's simply about making your business look beautiful. While good design certainly helps, branding is really about recognition.

When someone sees one of your Reels, opens one of your emails, visits your website, or receives one of your newsletters, they should immediately feel like they're interacting with the same business. That consistency builds trust, and trust is one of the most powerful tools you have in esthetician marketing.

The easier you are to recognize, the easier you are to remember. And when someone is finally ready to book a treatment or invest in their skincare, the business they remember is often the one they choose.
